Unidentified Huron-Wendat artist
Quebec, Canada; 1870–1900
Museum purchase 1979.0220
Attributed to an unidentified Huron-Wendat artist, this case is a stunning work of Indigenous art. Constructed from embroidered with dyed moose hair, this case exemplifies continuity of a centuries-old technique among Great Lakes Indigenous artists. It also recalls crewelwork embroidery patterns, which may explain why works like it were popular with white tourists.
